Illinois and New York Implement Bans on Single-Use Plastic Toiletry Bottles in Hotels
New environmental regulations target reduction of plastic waste in hospitality industry
Illinois and New York have enacted legislation banning the provision of single-use plastic toiletry bottles in hotel rooms as part of efforts to reduce plastic waste.
In Illinois, hotels with more than 50 rooms must comply by July 1, 2025, while smaller establishments have until January 1, 2026.
New York's similar ban takes effect on January 1, 2025, for larger hotels.
Violations may result in fines, with Illinois imposing penalties up to $1,500 for repeated offenses.
The measures encourage the adoption of refillable dispensers and aim to mitigate environmental impact from single-use plastics.
