Italy's Defense Minister Advocates for Lasting Peace in Ukraine at NATO Meeting
Guido Crosetto emphasizes the need for a sustainable resolution to the Ukraine conflict during discussions in Brussels.
Brussels – Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has reaffirmed the need for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, a sentiment echoed by various leaders at the NATO ministerial meeting held in Brussels.
Speaking to reporters, Crosetto emphasized the urgency of achieving a resolution that would not merely be a temporary cessation of hostilities but a comprehensive peace that prevents future conflicts.
He highlighted historical precedents to underscore the importance of a genuine resolution, referencing the aggression in Georgia and the annexation of Crimea, as well as ongoing tensions in the Donbass region.
Crosetto's remarks indicated a growing concern that if not addressed effectively, the situation could result in a gradual erosion of Ukraine's sovereignty.
The minister articulated a caution against what he termed an 'artichoke policy,' whereby parts of Ukraine might be peeled away over time, warning that history has shown how fragile the peace process can be if not established on solid grounds.
He stated that achieving true peace is paramount not only for Ukraine but also resonates with the objectives held by leaders in the United States, including former President Donald Trump.
Crosetto's comments come amidst a backdrop of ongoing discussions among NATO allies regarding support for Ukraine and strategies to foster stability in the region.
The call for a lasting peace aligns with broader international discourse on how to effectively resolve the conflict while ensuring the security of Ukraine.
