Right-Wing US Website Gateway Pundit Declares Bankruptcy Amid Defamation Lawsuits
The right-wing US website, The Gateway Pundit, which is known for spreading election conspiracies, will file for bankruptcy due to defamation lawsuits against it.
The site's parent company, TGP Communications, will file for bankruptcy in Florida, with founder Jim Hoft citing "progressive liberal lawfare attacks" as the reason.
Notable lawsuits include one from Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who are suing the organization in Missouri for defamation after being falsely accused of election wrongdoing on the website.
Two individuals, Freeman and Moss, secured a $148m judgment against Rudy Giuliani for defaming them with election lies.
However, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy, making payment uncertain.
Gateway Pundit, an outlet that published stories alleging election rigging, faces a defamation lawsuit from a former Dominion Voting Systems employee, Eric Coomer.
These lawsuits are part of efforts by pro-democracy groups, private companies, and individuals to hold accountable those spreading election lies, causing harm to individuals like Freeman, Moss, and Coomer.
The term "lawfare" refers to lawsuits used as a strategic weapon, often by those on the defensive.
According to Hoft, a company seeking bankruptcy protection is not an admission of fault, but rather a means for reorganization and consolidation of lawsuits when facing multiple legal attacks.
