Six Arrested, Including Airline Worker, in $22M Toronto Airport Gold Heist: Police Call It an Inside Job
Six people have been arrested and three more have warrants for their arrest in connection to a $22M gold heist at Toronto's Pearson International Airport in April 2023.
The suspects, who are all charged with over 19 counts, are believed to have stolen an air cargo container holding gold bars and foreign currency using fake paperwork.
The container had arrived on an Air Canada flight from Zurich, Switzerland.
Police describe the crime as an "inside job." Two former Air Canada employees are accused of helping in the theft of valuable cargo at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
One employee is currently in custody, and an arrest warrant has been issued for the other.
According to Detective Sgt. Mike Mavity of Peel Regional Police, the employees were needed to facilitate the theft, making it an "inside job." Air Canada has confirmed that both individuals worked for the company in the cargo division during the time of the incident.
The case is now before the courts, and Air Canada is limited in its ability to comment further.
Air Canada announced that two employees are under investigation in connection to a cargo container theft.
One employee has left the company, and the other has been suspended.
The investigation, named "Project 24Karat," is being led by the Pennsylvania division of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
A Canadian man, who was arrested in Pennsylvania in September 2023 for traffic violations, is believed to have driven the truck that stole the container.
The man was found to be in the US illegally and fled during a traffic stop after firearms were discovered in his rental car.
