South Korean Woman Falls for Deepfake Elon Musk Scam, Loses ₹ 41 Lakh
A South Korean woman named Jeong Ji-sun was scammed out of approximately ₹ 41 lakh ($50,000) by an imposter posing as Elon Musk on Instagram.
The scammer used a deepfake video during a video call to deceive her into believing she was interacting with the real Musk.
The incident occurred last year, and the woman described it as a dream-like experience.
She first made contact with the con artist when Musk added her as a friend on Instagram.
A woman shared her experience of being scammed by someone posing as Elon Musk.
She was initially skeptical but was won over by fake photos and personal stories.
The scammer also claimed to have met the South Korean president and used a deepfake video for a video call.
He eventually convinced her to transfer $50,000 to a fake employee's account.
A woman in South Korea was scammed out of her money by someone posing as Elon Musk online.
The imposter promised to invest her money and make her rich.
However, it was later revealed that this was part of an elaborate AI scam.
The victim, named Jeong, lost her money but South Korean laws do not have sufficient provisions to prevent such crimes.
A recent study showed that 71.4% of the 280 reported crimes between January and June 2022 involved women as victims.
