Starmer Confirms Ukraine's Irreversible Path to NATO in Call with Zelenskyy

UK Prime Minister reaffirms commitment to Ukraine as world leaders convene amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
On February 14, 2025, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed Ukraine's journey towards NATO membership during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This conversation occurred as international leaders gathered in Munich to address the conflict initiated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Starmer emphasized the United Kingdom's substantial support for Ukraine during the communication, highlighting a steadfast commitment to providing assistance for as long as necessary.

A Downing Street spokesperson stated that Starmer articulated that discussions surrounding Ukraine's future should involve Ukraine itself, ensuring its security guarantees and support for its sovereignty.

The commitment to Ukraine's NATO membership was reiterated by Starmer, referencing agreements made by allied nations at the NATO summit held in Washington last year.

The leaders took note of the imminent third anniversary of Ukraine's defense of its sovereignty, expressing that this would be a pivotal moment for showcasing international unity.

Zelenskyy communicated that he had briefed Starmer on his recent talks with former President Donald Trump, who had indicated a desire to negotiate peace with Russia.

Following his dialogue with Trump, he noted that discussions surrounding NATO membership for Ukraine remained viable despite Trump's skepticism regarding Ukraine's admission possibilities.

In addition to the foreign affairs discussions, Zelenskyy and Starmer examined the upcoming Munich Security Conference, where Zelenskyy will outline Ukraine's goals and seek support from global allies.

Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of collaboration between Ukrainian and American teams, alongside European partners, in pursuit of a comprehensive strategy for security and political cooperation.

At the Munich Security Conference, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy aimed to ease tensions between the United States and European nations, while also reaffirming the UK's longstanding support for Ukraine's sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Starmer recently held discussions with Trump's special envoy to the UK, Mark Burnett, regarding his planned visit to the U.S.

Both leaders noted the potential for enhanced collaboration between the UK and the U.S. in areas including trade and technology, emphasizing the strong ties binding the two nations.

The recent developments highlight the complexities of international relations as countries navigate support for Ukraine while managing diplomatic relations with Russia and the United States.
