Cyberattack Targets X: Elon Musk Points to Potential Nation-State Involvement
The social media platform experiences significant outages amid claims of a large-scale cyber assault.
On March 10, 2025, X (formerly known as Twitter) was subjected to a substantial cyberattack, according to the platform's owner Elon Musk.
The attack raised concerns regarding the involvement of a well-resourced, coordinated group or potentially a nation-state.
Musk noted on X that the platform regularly faces cyber threats but characterized this incident as particularly severe.
Throughout the day, X experienced three separate outages, each lasting approximately one hour.
Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions, documented a peak disruption reported by around 2,200 users in India at approximately 3:00 PM local time.
The service faced a resurgence of issues at 7:30 PM, garnering 1,500 reports of problems, with additional access difficulties arising later at around 9:00 PM.
Technical analysis revealed that of the reported issues, approximately 52 percent were attributed to problems with the website, while 41 percent related to the app, and 8 percent were linked to server connectivity concerns.
Elon Musk acquired X in 2022 for $44 billion and reached the milestone of becoming the first individual to amass 200 million followers on the platform in 2023. The events of this cyberattack reflect ongoing vulnerabilities in social media infrastructure and highlight the increasing sophistication and scale of cyber threats to major online platforms.
