Qatar Calls for Diplomatic Solution Between the US and Iran Amidst Regional Strains

The Prime Minister of Qatar advocates for a resolution as tensions between the US and Iran persist.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani emphasized the urgent necessity for a diplomatic solution between the United States and Iran, reiterating Qatar's strong opposition to any military escalation in the region.

Al-Thani stated, "Qatar will never support any form of military action in that area. We will persist until a diplomatic resolution between the US and Iran is achieved. An agreement must be reached."

His remarks came in response to US President Donald Trump's mention of a possible "peace agreement" with Iran during a televised interview.

Al-Thani highlighted the regional concerns regarding potential military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, emphasizing that Iran is "our immediate neighbor, and we must nurture good relations with all our neighbors... It is in regional interests to foster better ties with Iran."

The Prime Minister acknowledged notable progress in relations between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Iran over recent years.

He recognized existing policy differences with Tehran but pointed out that these have not undermined diplomatic relations among Gulf countries.

Trump suggested that "interesting days" lie ahead for US-Iran relations, indicating the potential for a new nuclear framework or consideration of other options, seemingly hinting at military responses.

In reply, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi dismissed the idea of direct negotiations with the US under the current circumstances, asserting, "While the US adheres to a policy of maximum pressure and threats, we will not engage in direct talks with the US."

Al-Thani also addressed Qatar's role in mediating a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

He emphasized Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's dedication to humanitarian efforts, stating, "If we can save just one life, it is worth everything."

He acknowledged the significant criticism Qatar has faced during the 15-month conflict, remarking, "We have endured relentless attacks for 15 months throughout this war on Gaza, something unimaginable; no one could endure such an onslaught."

Despite these difficulties, Al-Thani expressed that Qatar's ongoing efforts to facilitate a ceasefire have been worthwhile, noting the celebrations in both Gaza and Israel following the announcement brought him a sense of satisfaction.

He credited the successful ceasefire agreement to the joint efforts of Qatar, the US, and other stakeholders, particularly praising US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff for his contributions to the negotiations.

Since January 19, a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement has been established in Gaza, halting Israel’s military operations, which have reportedly resulted in over 48,400 Palestinian casualties, mainly among women and children, leaving the territory in dire conditions.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the Gaza conflict.

Additionally, Israel faces a genocide accusation at the International Court of Justice regarding its military actions.
