Thomas Jacob Sanford Named as Suspect in Deadly Michigan Church Shooting and Arson

Former U.S. Marine identified in Grand Blanc attack that killed four and injured eight before dying in a police shootout

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in the Grand Blanc Township, Michigan church attack is Thomas Jacob Sanford, aged 40, a resident of Burton, Mich. The assault occurred Sunday morning at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he crashed a pickup into the structure, opened fire during worship, and set the building ablaze.

Sanford was killed in an exchange of gunfire with responding officers on site. Officials believe he acted alone and used an assault rifle. The fire, believed to have been ignited with gasoline, compounded the damage even as investigators sifted through the charred remains for additional victims.

At least four people died in the incident and eight others were wounded, officials said. Some victims sustained gunshot wounds while others suffered from smoke inhalation; among the injured, at least two were said to be in critical condition. Congregants and nearby community members responded swiftly, helping evacuate individuals from the scene before the building fully collapsed.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have launched a full-scale investigation. Search warrants have been executed at Sanford’s properties, and authorities are analysing digital devices and personal records in a bid to uncover his motive. No clear rationale has yet been established.

The scale and audacity of the attack drew widespread condemnation. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed solidarity with victims and ordered flags to half-mast. National leaders decried the violence and pledged fuller support to local law enforcement.

In the Grand Blanc area, questions now intensify over security at places of worship, the prevention of targeted violence, and how communities can be safeguarded from attacks that combine arson with mass shooting elements.

As investigators continue their work, officials have called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperative, stressing that while much remains unknown, every detail recovered may prove critical to understanding how and why this tragedy unfolded.
