TikTok Suspends Rewards Feature in Lite App Amid EU Probe over Addictiveness Concerns
TikTok, a Chinese-owned video-sharing app, has suspended its rewards feature in the Lite version of its app in France and Spain following an EU probe.
The European Commission is investigating the app over concerns about user data protection and potential harm to children.
TikTok stated that the suspension would remain until the concerns are addressed.
EU tech enforcer Thierry Breton commented that "our children are not guinea pigs for social media." TikTok Lite, a lighter version of the popular TikTok app, was launched in France and Spain in March for users aged 18 and above.
The app allows users to earn points for rewards like vouchers or gift cards through its rewards program.
TikTok Lite requires less memory and performs well on slower internet connections.
However, the European Commission has launched an investigation into the app, threatening to suspend its rewards program due to concerns over potential risks to users' mental health.
The commission has demanded TikTok provide more information and a defense against the suspension by a Wednesday deadline.
The EU is investigating TikTok for a second time under the Digital Services Act (DSA) over concerns of addictiveness.
The investigation focuses on TikTok's rewards feature, which the EU believes could generate addiction.
The EU suspects that TikTok did not properly assess the risks and take necessary measures before launching the feature.
