Trump and Putin Talk About Peace Negotiations for Ukraine in Light of Worldwide Reactions
Leaders from the U.S. and Russia have come to an agreement to start talks, while officials from Europe and Ukraine emphasize the importance of their participation.
On February 12, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a 90-minute phone conversation, during which they agreed to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
After the call, President Trump declared that both countries would have their teams start discussions immediately, with the possibility of reciprocal visits between the two leaders.
In a following conversation, President Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to deliberate on measures to counter Russian aggression and foster lasting peace.
Zelenskyy stressed the necessity for Ukraine's direct participation in any negotiations and asserted that no decisions regarding Ukraine should occur without its involvement.
European leaders voiced their apprehensions about the conceivable exclusion of Ukraine and the European Union from the peace process.
Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, warned that any agreement reached without the involvement of European nations and Ukraine would be ineffective.
She also cautioned against making concessions to Russia prior to the commencement of talks, labeling such moves as appeasement.
The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain released a joint statement reiterating their support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
They emphasized that both Ukraine and Europe must participate in any negotiations and that Kyiv should receive strong security assurances as part of any agreement.
The Kremlin responded positively to Trump’s approach, contrasting it with the previous administration under Joe Biden.
Russian officials characterized the direct negotiations with the U.S. as a notable diplomatic advancement.
As discussions progress, global leaders are attentively observing the developing situation and the potential consequences of these negotiations on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
