Trump Unveils Reciprocal Tariffs as Trade Conflict Intensifies

The new tariffs imposed by the U.S. President are aimed at both allies and rivals, sparking worries about inflation and the dynamics of global trade.
In a notable change to U.S. trade policy, President Donald Trump has unveiled the introduction of 'reciprocal tariffs' targeting both allies and rivals.

This declaration, made during a press briefing in the Oval Office, is viewed as an intensification of the ongoing international trade dispute.

Trump described U.S. allies as frequently being 'worse than our enemies' with respect to trade practices.

The new tariffs will be customized for each trading partner, considering factors such as value added tax (VAT).

Since his inauguration, Trump has persistently promoted tariffs as a strategy to combat what he sees as unfair trade practices, claiming that such actions could boost government revenue and rectify trade disparities.

This recent announcement comes just hours before Trump is set to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, D.C., and the timeline for the tariffs' implementation remains unspecified.

Experts have suggested that the reciprocal aspect of these tariffs could have broader ramifications for emerging market economies, including India and Thailand, which already impose higher effective tariff rates on U.S. imports.

Nations like South Korea, which have current trade agreements with the United States, might face less impact from this tariff approach.

There are concerns about the potential effects of expanded tariffs on inflation within the U.S. economy.

Economists caution that implementing wide-ranging tariffs on imports might lead to higher prices for consumers, which contradicts Trump's aim to ease cost-of-living pressures, a central theme of his campaign during the November elections.

Though Trump's nominee for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, has indicated that increasing duties might not necessarily result in widespread inflation, some economists remain wary.

Trump has previously asserted his intention to impose tariffs comparable to those applied by other nations.

For example, if India were to impose a 25% tariff on U.S. automobiles, the U.S. would respond with an equivalent 25% tariff on Indian auto imports.

In advance of the Modi visit, India has reportedly proposed certain tariff concessions on select items, including high-end motorcycles.

Analysts at Nomura suggest that Trump's objective of enforcing reciprocal tariffs is meant to ensure fair treatment for U.S. exports and may also indirectly tackle existing trade imbalances with other countries.

According to Nomura, India has an average effective tariff of around 9.5% on U.S. exports, while U.S. tariffs on Indian exports are approximately 3%.

Other Asian countries, such as Thailand and China, impose tariffs of 6.2% and 7.1% on U.S. products, respectively.

Economic specialists observe that higher tariffs are commonly employed by less wealthy nations as a means of generating revenue and protecting domestic industries where non-tariff barriers are less viable.
