Trump Declares Crime Emergency in Washington, D.C.
Metropolitan Police placed under federal control amid violent crime concerns
President Donald Trump has declared a 'crime emergency' in Washington, D.C., placing the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control.
According to White House documents, the decision follows a murder rate exceeding 27 per 100,000 residents and vehicle theft rates among the highest in the world.
An executive order directs the department to immediately enforce the law under the operational authority of Attorney General Pam Bondi, while a separate memo orders deployment of the D.C. National Guard and calls for additional troops from state governors.
The administration cited recent high-profile murders as evidence the city has lost control, with Trump telling reporters on 'Liberation Day' that violent gangs had taken over the capital.
