White House Responds to Allegations of Court Order Violation in Venezuelan Deportations

The administration denies breaching a judge's order during recent deportations of Venezuelan migrants, amid legal and political scrutiny.
The White House has rejected claims of a "blatant violation" of a federal judge's order related to the deportation of approximately 250 Venezuelan individuals alleged to be gang members, processed on Saturday.

U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg had issued a temporary block against the deportations shortly before they were executed, prompting legal analysts to investigate the implications of the government's actions.

Judge Boasberg convened a hearing on Monday seeking clarification on the administration's compliance with his order, which prohibited the flights under the Alien Enemies Act—a law from 1798 intended for wartime use.

The order was issued shortly after the Trump administration invoked this act, triggering immediate legal appeals from progressive advocacy groups.

During a court session, the judge specifically instructed that any flights already airborne must return to U.S. territory.

Despite this direct order, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced via social media that the flights had successfully landed in his country, leading to further unrest over the administration's apparent defiance.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the deported migrants were no longer under U.S. jurisdiction when the judge's order was issued and asserted that the administration had complied with the court's directive.

In subsequent remarks, Leavitt characterized the judge's order as lacking lawful grounds post-departure, defending it as inconsistent with the executive authority provided under the Alien Enemies Act.

Unnamed Trump administration officials echoed this sentiment, claiming the flights had already exited U.S. airspace, thereby making the order inapplicable.

A court filing submitted by government lawyers described Judge Boasberg's oral command as "not enforceable" and cited operational and national security concerns regarding the necessity of the flights.

The Trump administration also indicated that some individuals had already been removed from U.S. soil before the judicial order was issued but did not elaborate on relevant legal justifications beyond the Alien Enemies Act.

Civil rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Democracy Forward, condemned the deportations as violations of judicial authority, contending that the actions constituted a significant challenge to the rule of law.

They have requested the court to compel the administration to clarify flight timing information and ensure adherence to judicial directives.

As tensions unfolded in the courtroom, the administration’s officials maintained that the actions were in alignment with strategic safety protocols intended to mitigate threats from what they referred to as foreign alien terrorists.

The situation continues to develop as Judge Boasberg has set another hearing for later on Monday to further scrutinize the actions taken by the Trump administration in relation to his orders.

In a separate but related legal challenge, the administration has also faced accusations of violating court protocols concerning the deportation of Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a medical professional with a valid U.S. visa, despite a temporary restraining order against her removal.

Reports indicate she was detained upon re-entry from Lebanon and put on a flight to Paris despite the injunction, raising additional concerns regarding the administration's adherence to judicial authority in immigration matters.
