Trump Addresses Possible Ukraine Ceasefire Amid Continuing Tensions

The U.S. President talks about Russia's wavering backing for a ceasefire as talks advance.
During a press briefing on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump conveyed a sense of cautious optimism about a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, following remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin expressed support for a 30-day ceasefire but mentioned that he had 'serious questions' he wanted to discuss with Trump.

Trump characterized Putin's comments as 'very promising' but stressed that they were not entirely comprehensive.

While meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House, he said, 'I’d love to meet with him or speak to him.

However, we need to finalize [the ceasefire agreement] quickly.'

This discussion follows the arrival of Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Moscow to engage in talks regarding the ongoing crisis.

Trump stated that if Russia were to turn down the proposed peace plan, it would be 'a very disappointing moment for the world.'

He remarked that substantial details surrounding a final agreement had already been discussed, adding, 'Now we’re going to see if Russia is on board, and if not, it will be a very disappointing moment for the world.'

In addressing potential long-term peace talks, Trump pointed out sensitive matters concerning territorial concessions.

'We have not been operating in secrecy.

We’ve been having discussions with Ukraine regarding land and territories that would be retained and relinquished,' he stated.

He also referenced a crucial power plant in these talks, alluding to the stakes involved with control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control and recognized as Europe's largest nuclear site.

Trump emphasized the intricacies of the negotiations, noting the difficulties in 'establishing the borders of a nation.'

These discussions are taking place in light of Ukraine's recent acceptance of a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, following diplomatic engagements in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, amidst heightened tensions following exchanges between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in late February.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the region has experienced considerable conflict and instability, underscoring the vital importance of ongoing international diplomatic initiatives.
