In a 2022 interview with The Economist, President Volodymyr Zelensky said there are countries in the West that, in order to weaken Russia, are prepared to bring about the end of Ukraine.
The meaning of this Western intent, he said, is the spilling of Ukrainian blood.
Zelensky made these remarks in the period following the Russian invasion, during days when there was an effort to quickly end the war, but the West preferred to continue it—at Ukraine’s expense.

The interview with The Economist took place two days before the direct Russia–Ukraine talks held on March 29, 2022, in Istanbul, and it is not clear when Zelensky changed his position and aligned with those countries that treated Ukraine as cannon fodder in the fight against Russia.
