Spain requests EU assistance to tackle large wildfires
The interior minister said Spain has asked European Union member states for support as major fires burn across multiple regions, seeking aircraft, ground teams and mapping aid through EU emergency channels.
Spain has requested assistance from European Union member states to respond to large wildfires affecting extensive areas of the country, the interior minister said.
According to the announcement, the request seeks support from partners across the bloc to reinforce national firefighting operations as multiple incidents continue across several regions.
Under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, a member state can ask others for operational aid during major emergencies.
Assistance typically includes water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, wildfire ground crews, incident management teams, and logistics support coordinated through the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre.
Additional tools available under the mechanism include emergency satellite mapping for damage assessment and fire-progress monitoring, and information services used by national coordination centres to direct resources and plan containment strategies.
The Spanish request follows an escalation in fire activity reported by national authorities.
Regional and local services remain engaged in suppression and protective measures in the affected areas.
Spain is one of several EU countries that routinely coordinate cross-border wildfire support during the peak fire season.
Deployments can involve rapid transfers of specialist aircraft and personnel between member states as required by the requesting authority.
