British Man Honored for Bravery After Amsterdam Stabbing Incident

A British citizen restrains a knifeman, who injured five individuals in central Amsterdam, earning commendations for his courageous actions.
A British man has been recognized for his bravery after he intervened in a stabbing incident in Amsterdam’s Dam Square, where an assailant injured five individuals on March 27, 2025. The incident, which unfolded in the late afternoon, involved an attacker wielding multiple knives, targeting victims seemingly at random.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the man, dressed in blue denim jeans and a black Nike hoodie, tackled the suspect and restrained him until law enforcement arrived.

The individual has been informally referred to as the 'hero of the Dam' due to his decisive actions during the attack.

Amsterdam's mayor, Femke Halsema, publicly praised the British citizen, mentioning on social media that she intends to meet with him to express gratitude for his actions.

She described him as a modest individual who is more concerned about the victims than seeking fame for his intervention.

The five victims of the attack included a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man from the United States, a 73-year-old woman from Belgium, a 26-year-old man from Poland, and a 19-year-old local woman.

They were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment, although details regarding their conditions remain undisclosed.

Maarten Brinkm, the head of the ACP police union, commended the citizen's actions, emphasizing the significance of such brave interventions in preventing further harm.

The attack began on Sint Nicolaasstraat and lasted several minutes before the suspect was subdued.

Local authorities have confirmed that one suspect is in custody, as investigations continue to uncover the motivations behind the stabbing spree.

The police have urged the public to share any video footage related to the incident to aid in the inquiry.

In addressing the recent rise in violence, Mayor Halsema remarked, 'The police investigation is in full swing and has full priority at the moment.

We hope to soon get more clarity about the background of this horrible stabbing.' In response to previous incidents attributed to individuals with mental health challenges, Amsterdam had established a hotline for residents to report concerning behaviors, initiated following an investigation into a fatal stabbing by a neighbor last year.
