Fifteen Injured After Delta Flight Crash Lands at Toronto Pearson Airport
Delta Flight 4819, arriving from Minneapolis, flips over during landing, resulting in multiple injuries.
A Delta Air Lines flight operated by Endeavor Air, designated Flight 4819, crash-landed at Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday, flipping upside down on the snowy tarmac.
The incident occurred around 2:45 PM local time as the aircraft, which was carrying 80 passengers, was landing after a flight from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to Peel regional paramedic services, 15 individuals sustained injuries from the incident.
Two people were reported in critical condition and were airlifted to a nearby trauma center, while one child was transported to a hospital in downtown Toronto by ambulance.
The others sustained minor injuries.
Eyewitness accounts share that emergency services responded promptly at the scene, where the aircraft lay belly-up with its wheels in the air.
Photos showed the jet stranded amidst heavy snowfall that had affected operations at the airport throughout the weekend.
Toronto Pearson Airport confirmed on the social media platform X that it was aware of the incident and that all passengers and crew members had been accounted for.
In a statement, the airport indicated that emergency teams were deployed to manage the situation.
John Nelson, a passenger on the flight, shared on social media a video of the flipped plane.
He reported, “Most people appear to be okay.
We’re all getting off,” suggesting that evacuation procedures went smoothly despite the accident.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) reported that they had been made aware of the incident and affirmed that all individuals on board had been evacuated safely.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced their intention to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed relief that there were no fatalities due to the incident, stating that provincial officials were in contact with local authorities and the airport to provide assistance.
The crash occurred in the context of a significant snowstorm impacting eastern Canada, which had already resulted in flight delays at Toronto Pearson Airport.
Strong winds and frigid temperatures compounded the weather challenges faced by the region.
The incident marks one of a series of recent aviation mishaps in North America.
Earlier in January, multiple incidents, including a fatal collision between a passenger jet and an Army helicopter near Washington D.C., raised concerns about aviation safety in the region.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has dispatched a team to further investigate the incident as details continue to emerge.
