Russia Claims Troops Have Entered Ukraine Amid Peace Talk Proposals
President Putin asserts the crossing of troops as simultaneous discussions on potential negotiations take place.
On February 19, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that thousands of Russian troops have crossed the Kursk border into Ukraine.
This assertion was made during a press briefing where he conveyed that the 810th brigade had moved into what he referred to as 'enemy territory', emphasizing that Russian forces are advancing along the entire combat contact line.
This development comes after Ukraine had gained control over approximately 1,100 square kilometers of territory within the Kursk region last August, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stating that his military has retained control of about half of that area since the advance.
In contrast to the military escalation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Putin's stated willingness to engage in peace talks with Zelenskyy.
Peskov highlighted that the Russian president is open to discussions on achieving peace but also underscored that Moscow's broader security concerns must be addressed prior to any negotiations.
Additionally, it was mentioned that Putin is prepared to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, although Peskov noted that no specific date for this meeting has been established and indicated that discussions had just commenced.
This announcement followed a series of U.S.-Russia talks held in Saudi Arabia, from which Ukrainian representatives, alongside British and European officials, were conspicuously excluded.
During a separate press conference, President Zelenskyy responded to remarks by President Trump, who suggested that Ukraine bore responsibility for initiating the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy expressed concern over Trump's claims, stating that his counterpart appears to be influenced by disinformation propagated by Russian sources.
He emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ukraine's interests and reiterated his commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
Amid these developments, the international community continues to observe the evolving situation with considerable interest as potential implications for regional stability and security remain at the forefront.
