Former Scottish National Party Executive Peter Murrell Jailed for Five Years Over £400,000 Embezzlement

The husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will serve more than five years after admitting to secretly using party funds to buy luxury vehicles, electronics, and designer goods over a 12-year period.
A Scottish judge has sentenced former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell to five years and three months in prison for embezzling more than £400,000 in party funds.

The sentencing concludes a multi-year financial investigation that dismantled Murrell’s decades-long career and cast a long shadow over Scotland's dominant political organization.

Murrell, who ran the party's internal operations for over twenty years and was married to former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, pleaded guilty to diverting £400,310 from the party’s principal bank account between August 2010 and October 2022. The stolen money, which originated from membership fees, legacies, and donor contributions, was used to fund an extensive secret lifestyle.

Prosecutors detailed how Murrell fabricated expense claims and manipulated the party's accounting to purchase a £124,000 luxury motorhome, an £80,000 Jaguar, a Volkswagen Golf, and tens of thousands of pounds in high-end accessories, including Smythson leather goods and Montblanc pens.

The conviction marks the climax of Operation Branchform, a complex police inquiry triggered in 2020 by activists questioning the disappearance of funds earmarked for a Scottish independence referendum campaign.

Detectives initially investigated potential fraud before uncovering a vast, escalating pattern of embezzlement hidden within digital records and international purchases.

The financial scandal triggered internal resignations, forced emergency audits, and severely destabilized the party during a critical period of political transition.

The investigation also drew in other senior figures, though police ultimately cleared them of wrongdoing.

Former party treasurer Colin Beattie and Nicola Sturgeon were both arrested, questioned, and subsequently released without charge.

Sturgeon, who led the Scottish government for eight years before her sudden resignation, was formally cleared of all suspicion.

Following Murrell's sentencing, she stated she was utterly deceived and expressed deep anger over his actions, confirming that the couple had ended their marriage.

Current party leadership welcomed the conviction, emphasizing that the political organization has overhauled its internal governance and financial oversight since Murrell's departure.

Murrell’s sentence is backdated to late May 2026, and his legal representatives have stated that the embezzled funds will be repaid to the party as he begins serving his time.
