Four Iranian Nationals Detained in Connection with Alleged Terror Plot in the UK
Arrests made amid ongoing investigations into a planned attack against a specific British target.
Four Iranian men are currently undergoing questioning concerning an alleged major terrorism plot against a specific target in the United Kingdom.
The men, all of Iranian nationality, were arrested on Saturday following a coordinated operation that involved armed police and, in some cases, special forces, due to concerns about potential weapon possession among the suspects.
A fifth individual, also arrested in Manchester as part of this operation, has since been released on bail.
The operation is part of an ongoing investigation led by Commander Dominic Murphy, the head of counter-terrorism for the Metropolitan Police.
Authorities are focused on determining the motivations behind the plot and ascertaining whether there is any ongoing threat to public safety.
Searches are being conducted at multiple locations across Greater Manchester, London, and Swindon, as investigators work to ascertain any links to Iran regarding this significant alleged attack plot.
In a separate but related effort, three additional Iranian nationals were arrested under legislation aimed at combating foreign state threats, with all remaining in police custody.
The primary concern of the UK government, counter-terrorism police, and security services is the potential for a thwarted attack, with fears that an act of violence could have been imminent.
The suspects include a 29-year-old arrested in Swindon, a 46-year-old detained in west London, a second 29-year-old apprehended in Cheadle Hume, and a 40-year-old taken into custody in Rochdale.
All four are being held under terrorism laws in connection with plans for terrorist acts, with magistrates granting warrants for their continued detention until this Saturday.
The individual arrested in Manchester, aged 24, is under bail conditions that impose restrictions on his activities following his release from custody.
The investigation has been a joint operation of counter-terrorism police and MI5, the UK's domestic intelligence agency.
Investigators have stated that while they are looking into the nature of the plot, they do not believe the target was a synagogue, countering earlier media speculation.
However, they have not disclosed whether the premises in question were related to the Jewish community in the UK.
This case appears to involve a level of sophistication beyond what has been observed in recent lone actor terrorism incidents within the country.
Authorities are currently analyzing the results of searches conducted on electronic devices related to the investigation.
Commander Murphy emphasized the complexity of the ongoing inquiry, assuring the public that safety remains a top priority as searches continue at several sites across the UK. He urged vigilance among the public and advised anyone with concerns to contact law enforcement.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the arrests reflect some of the most significant threats encountered in recent years.
Ken McCallum, head of MI5, previously noted in October 2024 the persistent threat posed by Iran, citing that five new planned attacks had been uncovered over the past year, primarily targeting dissidents, raising the total number of plots identified since January 2022 to twenty.
