Israel Advances Military Operations in Gaza, Seizing Territory and Increasing Civilian Displacement
Benjamin Netanyahu announces the expansion of military efforts aimed at capturing significant portions of the Gaza Strip amid humanitarian concerns and rising casualties.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel is actively 'seizing territory' in the Gaza Strip, announcing plans to 'divide up' the territory by constructing a new security corridor.
This announcement comes alongside a substantial escalation of aerial and ground operations in the region, which has been heavily affected by conflict since October 2023.
In a video address delivered on Wednesday evening, Netanyahu remarked, 'Tonight, we have shifted gears in the Gaza Strip.
The [Israeli army] is seizing territory, hitting the terrorists and destroying the infrastructure.' He specifically referred to the 'Morag route,' a planned corridor intended to facilitate greater control along the Gaza-Egypt border, echoing previous Israeli strategies involving similar corridors in the region.
According to the Israeli human rights organization Gisha, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed approximately 62 square kilometers, approximately 17% of the Gaza Strip, since military operations intensified.
This effort has effectively separated areas within Gaza, particularly cutting off Gaza City from southern regions by establishing the Netzarim corridor, which employs historical references to former Israeli settlements.
The military operation's announcement corresponds with statements made earlier by Defence Minister Israel Katz, who emphasized that large-scale civilian evacuations would accompany the effort to capture vast areas within Gaza.
Katz's remarks indicated the broad objectives of the IDF to 'crush' militant infrastructure, although specifics regarding the extent of land capture remain undisclosed.
Following the renewed military actions, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in significant civilian casualties, with at least 21 reported deaths in Khan Younis and Rafah.
Additionally, a strike on a Jabaliya health clinic, which was housing displaced individuals, reportedly killed 19 people, including nine children.
The IDF stated that precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties, although it acknowledged that a Hamas control center was located within the same facility.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that the strikes affected a clinic previously shared with 160 displaced families, highlighting the dire situation facing civilians amid military operations.
Reports indicate that the IDF has intensified its bombing campaign since the end of a temporary ceasefire on March 18, 2025, which had been established to allow negotiations concerning hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.
Estimates from the UN suggest that approximately 140,000 individuals have been displaced since the resurgence of conflict, with over 90% of Gaza's population of 2.3 million reportedly fleeing their homes.
The ongoing Israeli military operations have also limited humanitarian aid access, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
As part of the military expansion, Israel has issued comprehensive evacuation orders to residents in southern Gaza, directing them toward areas designated as humanitarian zones, though those areas have also experienced ongoing airstrikes.
Reports confirm that a significant majority of Gaza is now subject to active forced displacement orders, raising substantial concerns over the safety and well-being of those remaining in the area.
The conflict has provoked widespread protests among families of hostages held by Hamas, with calls for a renewed focus on their release as military operations continue.
The initial surge of violence began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, claiming over 1,200 lives and leading to the capture of numerous hostages.
Currently, Hamas maintains custody of 59 hostages, as negotiations for their release remain stagnant amid the escalating military actions.
The conflict has resulted in an estimated 50,357 Palestinian deaths, predominantly among civilians, according to reports from Gaza's Health Ministry.
Efforts for mediation by Qatar and Egypt remain ongoing, but substantial advancements towards a ceasefire have yet to be observed.
Israel's military actions have been met with international scrutiny, particularly concerning potential violations of humanitarian principles and law, emphasizing the need for protection of civilians during the ongoing conflict.
