Second Body Identified in Manitoba Landfill in Search for Victims of Serial Killer

The remains of Marcedes Myran, 26, are confirmed to be among those discarded by a serial killer in Winnipeg.
The Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have confirmed the identity of a second victim whose remains were discovered in the Prairie Green Landfill, located near Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The remains belong to Marcedes Myran, a 26-year-old woman from Long Plain First Nation.

The announcement was made on Monday, with police stating that Myran's family has been notified and asking for respect regarding their privacy during this difficult time.

Myran was killed in 2022 by Jeremy Skibicki, who was later sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2024 after being found guilty of the first-degree murder of four women, an act described by the presiding judge as “jarring and numbing.” In conjunction with the identification of Myran's remains, authorities previously announced that human remains found at the same landfill belonged to Morgan Harris, a 39-year-old woman.

The investigation into the landfill commenced after local officials reversed their initial stance, declaring a search operation necessary despite earlier claims that probing the refuse would be prohibitively expensive.

The search for the victims has drawn considerable public attention and sparked outrage among families, who felt dismissed when initial recovery efforts were deemed too challenging by authorities.

The remains of a third victim, Rebecca Contois, who hailed from the Crane River First Nation, were located in a dumpster near Skibicki’s residence in 2022. Authorities are still working to identify and recover the remains of Skibicki's fourth victim, an unidentified woman referred to as Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, or Buffalo Woman.

The search for victims in the Prairie Green Landfill became a prominent issue in the 2023 provincial election when New Democratic Party leader Wab Kinew campaigned on it as a key promise.

Following the election, Kinew's party won a majority and the federal government pledged C$40 million to facilitate the search efforts.

The excavation operations commenced in December 2023, with teams initially sorting through 20,300 cubic meters of material using manual methods while constructing a specialized steel heated building to assist with sifting through wet refuse during frigid winter temperatures typically around -20°C.

Of the 45 search technicians engaged, half identify as Indigenous, including various specialists such as a forensic anthropologist and family liaisons.

This significant effort symbolizes broader societal support for attempting to locate the missing women and address the issue of violence against Indigenous women in Canada.

The situation remains part of ongoing discussions on the treatment and representation of Indigenous communities, highlighting the need for systemic changes to protect vulnerable populations.
