Understanding 'Sledging': A New Dating Trend Among Gen Z
How 'Sledging' Reflects Seasonal Dating Patterns and Emotional Implications
As winter approaches, a new dating trend known as 'sledging' is becoming prevalent among Gen Z.
This practice involves single individuals prolonging relationships throughout the colder months to avoid being alone, delaying breakups for convenience rather than genuine connection.
According to Claire Rénier, a relationship expert from the dating app Happn, this trend is particularly harmful as it manipulates emotions for temporary solace.
A survey by Happn, featuring over 600 participants, indicated that 15% of Gen Z individuals have engaged in 'sledging' during the winter season.
Many cited companionship, sexual relationships, or evading intrusive questions about their singleness during the holidays as reasons for this behavior.
The survey also revealed that 25% of these individuals plan to end their relationships by Christmas as early as August, while the majority opt to do so by November.
Rénier emphasizes the importance of building authentic and meaningful connections, suggesting that young people focus on shared interests and commonalities to form lasting relationships beyond the seasonal dynamics.
