Brighton Thrash Aston Villa in Four-Goal Opening Half as Manchester City Trail Bournemouth

Unai Emery's side suffer a disastrous start featuring a red card and an own goal, while the defending champions fall behind at the Etihad.
Brighton and Hove Albion produced a devastating first-half display to take a 4-0 lead over ten-man Aston Villa, delivering the biggest shock of the Premier League's opening weekend.

The extraordinary collapse leaves Unai Emery’s side facing an uphill battle after conceding four goals, scoring an own goal, and seeing debutant João Gomes sent off before the interval.

Brighton dismantled the visitors from the opening whistle, exploiting defensive errors and repeatedly breaching Villa’s restructured back line.

Villa's struggles compounded when Gomes received a straight red card, making them only the second team in Premier League history—alongside Southampton in 2021—to concede four goals, receive a red card, and score an own goal in the first forty-five minutes of a match.

Brighton continued to press relentlessly, nearly extending the deficit to five before the break.

Across the division, reigning champions Manchester City found themselves trailing 1-0 at half-time against AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.

Marcus Tavernier provided the breakthrough for the visitors, capitalizing on defensive gaps to give Bournemouth a deserved lead as City's attack, led by Erling Haaland, struggled for fluency amid visible frustration from the home crowd.

Off the pitch, Manchester City moved to reinforce their squad, agreeing to an £86 million transfer fee for French midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.

The major acquisition comes as Pep Guardiola looks to address tactical imbalances exposed during the early stages of the domestic campaign.

With second-half action resuming across both grounds, Aston Villa face damage limitation on the South Coast, while Manchester City must reconfigure their attack to avoid an opening-weekend defeat.
