Imran Khan and Others Face Arrest Warrants Over Islamabad Protest
Pakistan court issues non-bailable warrants for high-profile figures following deadly protest
In Islamabad, an anti-terrorism court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and 93 others.
The warrants relate to a protest organized by Khan's party in November, which turned violent, resulting in the deaths of 12 supporters and hundreds of arrests, according to PTI.
On November 13, Khan called for nationwide protests, demanding the reinstatement of PTI’s electoral mandate, release of detained members, and reversal of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
The police provided a list of 96 suspects, citing involvement in violent actions against officers and causing public panic.
ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra authorized the warrants.
Other key figures like former President Arif Alvi and ex-National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser are also named.
The protest's FIR includes charges under the Pakistan Penal Code, Anti-Terrorism Act, and Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act.
Khan has been detained on remand since 2023 amidst multiple cases following the end of his government in April 2022.
