Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni Sues Historian and Rock Star for Defamation: 'Neo-Nazi' and 'Fascist' Allegations
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy has filed a defamation lawsuit against historian Luciano Canfora for calling her a "neo-Nazi at heart" during a school debate in April 2022.
Meloni also previously sued the frontman of British rock band Placebo for labeling her "racist" and "fascist" during a concert in Italy in 2023.
The Italian court has approved both cases.
A trial is scheduled to begin on October 7, where Italian politician Giorgia Meloni is suing Roberto Saviano and British rock band Placebo's frontman, Brian Molko.
Meloni previously won a lawsuit against Saviano for criticizing her stance against migrants, resulting in a suspended fine of 1,000 euros.
She also brought a suit against Molko for calling her "racist" and "fascist" during a concert in Italy in July 2023.
Meloni posted a video of Molko's performance on Facebook, condemning his words as "vulgar propaganda to young students." In an interview with AFP, Molko, a former professor in Greek and Latin philology at the University of Bari, expressed no remorse.
Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Italy's far-right Brothers of Italy party, has written in her autobiography about being inspired by post-war Italian far-right leaders, including Giorgio Almirante, who was a founder of the now-defunct Italian Social Movement (MSI), a party formed by supporters of Benito Mussolini after World War II.
Canfora, a historian, explains that when people think of neo-Nazis, they often don't associate them with criminal activities, but rather with holding onto outdated ideologies from the past.
Meloni's connection to these historical figures raises questions about her party's stance on fascist ideology.
