Olaf Scholz Emphasizes Cautious Ukraine Policy Ahead of German Elections

Chancellor faces re-election challenge by prioritizing restraint in military support to Ukraine.
As Germany heads towards early elections in February, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is banking on his conservative approach to Ukraine as his key campaign strategy.

In a recent parliamentary address, Scholz defended his decision to withhold long-range missiles from Kyiv, aiming to avoid escalating the conflict with Russia.

He stressed that his cautious stance has been crucial in preventing further tensions.

Meanwhile, his main rival, Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union, advocates a more aggressive approach, criticizing Scholz's refusal to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

Current polls suggest Merz is leading, with Germany's conservatives at 32%, while Scholz's Social Democratic Party trails at 16%.

Despite his party's position, Scholz hopes to regain ground by promoting himself as the 'peace chancellor.' As geopolitical dynamics shift, especially with changes in U.S. leadership, Scholz's strategy will be pivotal in the upcoming election.
