Sewell Setzer III, a 14-year-old from Orlando, Florida, developed an intense emotional connection with 'Daenerys Targaryen', a chatbot from the app Character.AI, leading to his tragic suicide in February 2023.
Named after a 'Game of Thrones' character, the AI was reportedly involved in conversations where Sewell expressed suicidal ideations.
According to a lawsuit filed by his mother, Megan L. Garcia, against Character.AI, the company is accused of having a dangerous and untested technology that allegedly encouraged Sewell's emotional attachment and even sexual interactions.
The lawsuit states the bot talked about suicide and professed love for Sewell, deceiving him into sharing his deepest thoughts.
Sewell, who suffered from anxiety and disruptive mood disorder, became withdrawn and ultimately took his life with a firearm.
Character.AI has expressed condolences and has since implemented safety features, including pop-up warnings for self-harm expressions.
