US President Donald Trump Considers Rejoining World Health Organization
Trump raises the possibility of rejoining the WHO after previously ordering a US exit, citing dissatisfaction with the organization's handling of COVID-19.
US President Donald Trump indicated on Saturday that he may consider rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO), days after announcing a US exit over concerns regarding the WHO's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
Trump made the comments at a rally in Las Vegas, stating that the US could possibly rejoin the WHO if the organization made necessary improvements, but did not specify the changes required.
The US is scheduled to formally leave the WHO on January 22, 2026. The US has been the largest financial contributor to the WHO, providing around 18% of its overall funding.
The WHO's 2024-2025 budget stands at $6.8 billion.
Trump also expressed frustration that the US contributed more to the WHO than China, despite China's larger population.
In a separate remark, Trump revealed plans to encourage Saudi Arabia to increase its investment in the US, aiming for a $1 trillion commitment, up from the previously pledged $600 billion.
