Blossom Kite Festival Fills Washington Skies with Color as Spring Celebrations Peak

Thousands gather at the Washington Monument for a vibrant highlight of the National Cherry Blossom Festival
The skies above the Washington Monument are set to come alive with color as the annual Blossom Kite Festival returns, drawing large crowds to one of the most anticipated events of the spring season in the United States capital.

Held on 28 March as part of the wider National Cherry Blossom Festival, the event transforms the National Mall into a vivid display of soaring kites, family activities and cultural performances.

From morning through late afternoon, visitors gather on the monument grounds to launch their own kites or watch professional flyers perform intricate aerial demonstrations.

Organisers describe the festival as a celebration of community, creativity and the arrival of spring, coinciding with the peak blooming period of the city’s iconic cherry trees.

The event is free and open to all ages, reinforcing its status as one of the most accessible and inclusive highlights of the broader festival programme.

Throughout the day, a series of competitions and exhibitions showcases both traditional and contemporary kite designs.

Enthusiasts take part in judged contests for craftsmanship, visual appeal and flight performance, while experienced teams present choreographed routines that turn the sky into a moving canvas.

Alongside the aerial displays, the festival offers a wide range of ground-level activities, including kite-making workshops, children’s crafts and educational programmes led by local institutions.

Cultural elements also play a prominent role, with Japanese drumming performances adding a dynamic soundtrack that reflects the historic ties behind the cherry blossom celebrations.

This year’s festival carries the theme “Red, White and Bloom,” aligning with commemorations linked to the United States’ two hundred and fiftieth anniversary, and lending a patriotic dimension to the visual spectacle.

The Blossom Kite Festival forms part of a multi-week celebration that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, highlighting both the natural beauty of the cherry blossoms and the cultural exchange that underpins the tradition.

With favourable bloom forecasts and a full programme of events, organisers expect strong attendance as the city embraces one of its most recognisable seasonal traditions.
