House Republican Introduces Bill to Limit AI Exports to China
A new legislation aims to restrict China's access to U.S. technology due to worries regarding DeepSeek's utilization of American chips and associated data security concerns.
Chairman Mark Green of the House Homeland Security Committee, a Tennessee Republican, has put forth a legislative proposal aimed at tightening export controls on advanced U.S. technology intended for China.
In a Fox News Digital interview, Chairman Green explained that the bill is intended to create protections to stop China from obtaining sensitive American technology, which he associates with the growth of advanced artificial intelligence applications.
This proposal follows reports indicating that China has accumulated chips and used components that fall below existing export controls to boost its technological advancements.
Green specifically mentioned DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based artificial intelligence software company, whose AI chatbot has been likened to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
DeepSeek recently launched a new AI model that operates at lower costs than similar systems from firms like Meta and OpenAI, generating considerable interest in U.S. markets.
The developments at DeepSeek have heightened concerns among U.S. officials regarding the collection of American data and the potential misuse of technology that could impact data security and privacy.
Additionally, the U.S. Commerce Department is reportedly looking into whether DeepSeek acquired chips that fall under U.S. export restrictions, as reported by Reuters.
The proposed legislation would impose export controls on technologies and intellectual property deemed essential to national interests.
The bill also proposes sanctions against foreign actors involved in transactions for such technologies, as well as against Chinese entities that knowingly use technology subject to these controls.
This legislative initiative is part of ongoing efforts by U.S. lawmakers to confront issues related to the transfer of critical technology to China.
