UN Chief Denounces Trump's Gaza Plan, Cautions Against Ethnic Cleansing
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has dismissed US President Donald Trump's proposal for US oversight of Gaza, highlighting the danger of ethnic cleansing and advocating for a two-state resolution.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has denounced a recent suggestion by US President Donald Trump, who proposed that the United States should take 'long-term ownership' of Gaza.
Addressing a UN committee dedicated to Palestinian rights, Guterres cautioned against the risk of ethnic cleansing, highlighting that any involuntary displacement of individuals would contravene international law.
Trump's comments were made during a White House press briefing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he also urged Palestinians to move to Jordan or Egypt.
Although Trump's administration later sought to clarify the proposal by stating that any displacement would be temporary, Guterres reiterated the significance of a two-state solution for achieving enduring peace between Israel and Palestine.
Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour echoed this perspective, dismissing Trump's plan and underscoring Gaza’s crucial part in Palestinian sovereignty.
In spite of the ongoing devastation in Gaza due to Israel’s military operations, Palestinians have returned to certain areas of the region under a delicate ceasefire, while international discussions regarding Gaza's future are continuing.
