Intensified Russian Drone Strikes Target Kyiv and Odesa
Recent attacks include damage to a maternity ward as Ukraine faces ongoing aerial assaults.
On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, Ukraine reported a significant escalation in aerial assaults as Russia launched a large-scale drone strike targeting multiple locations, including the capital, Kyiv, and the southern port city of Odesa.
Regional officials indicated that the attacks were part of a broader pattern of intensified military operations by Russia, which it claims are responses to recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.
The drone strikes commenced shortly after midnight, affecting four districts in Kyiv, including the historic Podil neighborhood, as reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko on the Telegram messaging platform.
Local military authorities advised residents to find bomb shelters as the strikes were ongoing.
Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, confirmed that the attacks were simultaneous across various parts of the city, resulting in damage to residential properties and igniting fires.
In Odesa, the drone attacks were characterized as 'massive' by regional governor Oleh Kiper.
Notable targets included an emergency medical building and a maternity ward, along with surrounding residential structures.
Kiper reported that one civilian—a 59-year-old man—was killed in the strikes, and at least four individuals sustained injuries.
Thankfully, regarding the maternity hospital, there were no casualties, as both patients and staff were successfully evacuated prior to the strike.
Governor Kiper shared images depicting shattered windows at a medical facility and visible damage to the exteriors of various buildings in Odesa.
Despite longstanding assertions from both sides of the conflict that they do not intentionally target civilians, civilian casualties in the war, which has been ongoing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, number in the thousands, with a significant majority being Ukrainian citizens.
