Kamala Harris Pursued Barack Obama's Support Amid Uncertainty Surrounding the 2024 Democratic Ticket
A new book discloses information regarding the dynamics between Kamala Harris and Barack Obama as she aimed to take Joe Biden's spot on the ticket.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly "quite irritated" with former President Barack Obama while she sought his endorsement to replace former President Joe Biden on the 2024 Democratic ticket.
A new book suggests that Obama's opposition to her intensified as it became evident that she was likely to secure the nomination.
The authors note that Harris and Obama shared numerous donors and political allies, and much of the party rallied behind her. However, Obama was hesitant about her running in Biden's stead due to doubts about her ability to defeat Trump.
Regardless, Obama spoke with Harris over the subsequent days and ultimately found himself in a situation where his actions against Biden and Harris could tarnish his reputation among Democratic elites.
Obama's commitment to loyalty within the Democratic Party was also at stake.
Following some deliberation, Obama took five days to endorse Harris after Biden exited the race, with the endorsement ultimately revealed in a video of Harris receiving a call from Barack and Michelle Obama.
The book indicates that the entire presentation, including the script, was crafted to enhance the Obamas' image, portraying Harris as pleading for their approval.
The authors also state that Obama worked behind the scenes to facilitate an open primary, as he believed Harris was not the most suitable candidate for Democrats and lacked confidence in her electoral prospects.
