Hamas Leadership Transition: Committee to Govern Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Hamas has chosen a five-member committee to govern the group following the assassination of leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces. This committee, based in Doha, will collectively lead while avoiding appointing a single successor ahead of upcoming elections. The committee includes regional representatives and is charged with strategic decision-making amid the current conflict.
Following the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces, the Palestinian group has decided against appointing a single successor, opting instead for a five-member ruling committee based in Doha, Qatar.
This leadership strategy arises from the need to maintain cohesive governance amid ongoing conflict and communication challenges within Gaza.
The committee will include representatives such as Khalil al-Hayya for Gaza, Zaher Jabarin for the West Bank, and Khaled Meshaal for Palestinians abroad, alongside Mohammed Darwish, head of the Shura advisory council.
This body is tasked with strategic decision-making during wartime.
Previous political leader Ismail Haniyeh was also assassinated in July, leading to the necessity of this collective leadership structure, which will function until the next leadership elections, tentatively scheduled for March.
