Thailand Orders Return of 284 Tonnes of Illegal Electronic Waste to the United States
Authorities intercept mislabeled containers at a major port and enforce strict environmental rules by sending hazardous cargo back to its country of origin.
Thai authorities have ordered the return of 284 tonnes of illegally imported electronic waste to the United States after officials uncovered the shipment at Laem Chabang Port in eastern Thailand.
Customs officers and environmental regulators discovered the cargo in twelve shipping containers that had been declared as scrap metal.
Upon inspection, however, the containers were found to contain dismantled electronic equipment including circuit boards and other electronic components, materials classified as hazardous waste under Thai law.
Officials said the discovery followed intelligence alerts about suspicious shipments arriving at the port.
Once the contents were verified, the shipment was immediately treated as an illegal import because Thailand has banned the import of many categories of electronic waste.
The government has instructed that the cargo be shipped back to the United States in accordance with international environmental rules.
Thailand ratified the Basel Convention in 2023, a global agreement that regulates cross-border movements of hazardous waste and requires illegally transported materials to be returned to their country of origin.
Authorities emphasized that the exporter will bear responsibility for the return of the waste.
Investigators are also examining additional containers linked to the shipment and say more illegal electronic waste could potentially be uncovered during inspections.
Electronic waste presents significant environmental and health risks when handled improperly.
Discarded electronics often contain toxic materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium, as well as chemical residues that can contaminate soil and water if not processed in controlled facilities.
