The Observer, World's Oldest Sunday Newspaper, Up for Sale

The Guardian Media Group is in talks to sell The Observer, the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, to Tortoise Media. Founded in 1791 and owned by GMG since 1993, The Observer could see significant investment if the sale proceeds. The Guardian will continue as an online offering, focusing on global reach and reader funding.
The historic Sunday newspaper, The Observer, founded in 1791, might soon have a new owner as the Guardian Media Group (GMG) announced it is in negotiations to sell the publication.

The potential buyer is Tortoise Media, an online startup launched in 2019.

GMG, which acquired The Observer in 1993, stated that the sale amount remains undisclosed but is significant enough to warrant detailed discussions.

If the sale proceeds, GMG's flagship title, The Guardian, will continue as a 24/7 online media outlet with an emphasis on global reach and reader funding.

GMG chief executive Anna Bateson highlighted that the sale will provide a substantial investment opportunity for The Observer and enable The Guardian to expand its global and digital footprint.
