US Pursues $100 Million From Singapore-Based Ship Owner
The US Justice Department has sued Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private for over 100 million dollars, following the collision of the cargo ship M/V Dali with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The lawsuit seeks to cover the costs of clearing debris and reopening the port of Baltimore. The collision resulted in the deaths of six workers and was attributed to negligence and mismanagement by the ship operators.
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit to recover over $100 million from Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private, the Singapore-based owner and operator of the cargo ship M/V Dali.
The ship lost power while leaving Baltimore for Sri Lanka and collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, resulting in the deaths of six road workers and obstructing the shipping channel.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for Maryland, aims to cover the costs of clearing the debris and reopening the port.
Officials cited negligence and mismanagement by the ship operators, who allegedly failed to address known vibration issues.
This lawsuit follows an earlier action by Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine to limit liability to $44 million.
Additional claims for bridge reconstruction costs and wrongful death lawsuits by the victims' families are also expected.
The port's Fort McHenry channel was reopened on June 10.
