Tragic Nightclub Fire in North Macedonia Claims 59 Lives and Injures Over 100

Authorities investigate the causes behind a catastrophic blaze at Pulse nightclub in Kočani, as the nation mourns its young victims.
A devastating fire at the Pulse nightclub in the eastern town of Kočani, North Macedonia, has resulted in the deaths of 59 people and injuries to over 100, marking one of the country's worst tragedies in recent history.

The fire reportedly broke out early Sunday morning during a concert featuring the popular hip-hop group DNK, with approximately 1,500 attendees present at the time.

According to North Macedonia’s interior minister, Panche Toshkovski, the blaze was triggered by special-effect pyrotechnics that ignited the club’s easily flammable roof.

Eyewitness accounts from social media and local news indicate that chaos ensued as the fire quickly spread, with thick smoke filling the venue and panicked concert-goers attempting to escape.

Toshkovski confirmed that a preliminary inspection of the venue revealed the nightclub was operating without a valid license, which has raised concerns about safety regulations and compliance with legal standards.

Police have since detained over a dozen individuals in connection with the incident, although details regarding their specific roles remain unclear.

Health officials reported that 118 people were admitted to hospitals in the towns of Kočani and Skopje, with at least 27 individuals suffering from severe burns.

Children were among those injured, underscoring the tragic impact on families and the community.

Markos Trosanovski, a political commentator in Skopje, remarked on the national sense of shock and grief that has enveloped the country.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski described the loss of young lives as 'irreparable,' calling for urgent action from health services, police, and local authorities to assist victims and their families.

The government has commenced inspections of nightlife venues to ensure adherence to safety regulations.

In a display of solidarity, neighboring countries, including Greece and Albania, have extended offers of assistance, with EU officials also expressing condolences to the victims' families.

The local population has come together to mourn, lighting candles in memory of those lost in the fire.

As emergency response teams continue their work, the focus remains on providing care for the injured and uncovering the circumstances leading up to this tragic event, which has left an indelible mark on a nation of 1.8 million people.
