US Rejects Hamas Ceasefire Proposal Amid Ongoing Conflict in Gaza

Hamas offers terms for reinstating a Gaza ceasefire, which the US finds impractical; military actions continue as negotiations stall.
The United States has dismissed a ceasefire proposal from Hamas that the group deemed an 'exceptional deal.' This rejection comes amid ongoing military actions and humanitarian concerns in Gaza.

Hamas's offer included the release of an American-Israeli hostage and four other captives in exchange for the reinstatement of a ceasefire agreement, alongside demands for the entry of humanitarian aid into the region and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from a strategic corridor along its border with Egypt.

Hamas maintained that negotiations for a second phase of the ceasefire should commence immediately upon the release of the hostages.

However, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff characterized these demands as 'entirely impractical,' warning that Hamas is miscalculating the situation with regard to timing and negotiations.

In response to Hamas's offer, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office accused the group of engaging in manipulation and psychological warfare.

The Israeli military continues to conduct airstrikes in Gaza, claiming to target individuals involved in militant activities and those violating ceasefire conditions.

Amid these tensions, airstrikes in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, one of whom was identified as a local journalist operating a drone.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports significant civilian casualties from Israeli military operations amidst an incomplete ceasefire agreement, which had initially seen the release of 25 Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

The Israeli government argues that it has maintained security measures to prevent the re-entry of fuel and humanitarian supplies into Gaza, citing concerns over potential arms smuggling.

This has resulted in a deepening humanitarian crisis within Gaza, where food and medical supplies are critically low.

Water access has also been severely restricted, with officials in Rafah announcing the suspension of essential services due to fuel shortages exacerbated by Israeli restrictions.

Talks facilitated by Egypt and Qatar are ongoing, aimed at bridging the gap between Hamas and Israel as hostilities have persisted despite initial agreements.

While preparations for continuing dialogue have been made, significant progress remains elusive.

The broader humanitarian implications of the conflict continue to escalate, with a drastic increase in casualties reported as military actions unfold, deepening the urgency of international responses to the situation.
