YouTube Settlement Channelled into Trump’s White House Ballroom Project
Alphabet-owned platform agrees to pay nearly twenty-five million dollars, with most funds allocated to a State Ballroom fund
President Donald Trump’s planned White House State Ballroom has received a substantial financial boost from a legal settlement with YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc., following a multiyear lawsuit over the suspension of his account after the January six, 2021 Capitol riot.
YouTube agreed to pay approximately twenty-four and a half million dollars to resolve the case, with around twenty-two million directed into the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit that is supporting fundraising for the White House ballroom project.
The lawsuit stemmed from Trump’s claims that YouTube violated his free-speech rights when it suspended his channel and access to its services.
The platform did not admit any legal wrongdoing as part of the settlement, and the agreement ended a dispute that has spanned more than four years of litigation.
Under the terms, a large share of the payment will help underwrite construction of the 90,000-square-foot White House State Ballroom, an ambitious expansion to the East Wing intended to create a larger formal venue for official events.
The settlement is the last in a series of technology-related legal resolutions involving Trump, following multimillion-dollar agreements with other major platforms over similar disputes.
The funding from YouTube complements private donations from corporate and individual donors already committed to the project, which has been a focal point of both praise and criticism as Trump pursues his vision for a grand ceremonial space in the nation’s capital.
Requests for comment from YouTube and its parent company indicated that settlement terms were agreed as part of a broader desire to close the long-standing litigation, while White House representatives described the contribution as helpful in advancing the privately financed ballroom construction.
