UN Whistleblower: Secret China Bribes and Family Intimidation
A former employee of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) accused the organization of providing China with advance information about attending the Human Rights Council and alleged that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as well as two former Presidents of the General Assembly, had received bribes.
The OHCHR's policy of secretly sharing this information with China is publicly acknowledged.
The whistle-blower's claims have not been independently verified.
Two individuals with influence over the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals were paid during negotiations, according to reports.
China is believed to be involved in these payments, and there have been allegations of China imposing secret conditions that the bribes not be spent in countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Additionally, Emma Reilly, who spoke to NDTV, claimed that in some cases where China was provided with names, delegates reported family members being arrested, placed under house arrest, sentenced to long prison terms without cause, tortured, or, in the case of Uyghurs, put in concentration camps.
Ms. Reilly, a former employee of the United Nations, accused China of detaining and even causing the death of some individuals whose names were handed over to Chinese authorities.
She shared instances where family members died in detention and one person who attended a UN event later died after being returned to China.
Ms. Reilly testified in court about these incidents and criticized the UN for facilitating such actions instead of denouncing them.
She was fired from her job for speaking out about this policy, but she emphasized that she was never accused of lying.
