US Launches Airstrikes on Houthi Targets in Yemen Under Trump's Orders

Donald Trump authorizes military action to counter Houthi threats to maritime security in the Red Sea.
The United States has initiated a series of airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, following an order from President Donald Trump amid escalating tensions concerning maritime security.

On March 15, 2025, Trump announced the strikes, pledging to apply "overwhelming lethal force" until Iranian-backed Houthi rebels desist from attacking shipping in the Red Sea, a crucial global maritime corridor.

Reports from Houthi officials indicate that the airstrikes led to multiple explosions in the capital, Sana'a. Visual evidence shared online depicts significant plumes of smoke rising from the area surrounding Sana'a's airport complex, which houses a major military facility.

Casualty figures from Houthi sources suggest that at least nine individuals have died, with several others injured.

In a statement on social media, Trump emphasized the necessity of these operations to safeguard American shipping interests and restore navigational freedom in international waters.

He attributed the ongoing Houthi campaign targeting vessels to a broader issue of terrorism endorsed by Iran, threatening to hold the country accountable for its support of the rebel group.

The Houthi movement, which has governed Yemen's capital since 2014, has increasingly targeted maritime vessels, particularly those associated with Israel, as a form of retaliation for the ongoing Israeli operational blockade on Gaza.

Houthi forces have a recorded history of launching missiles and drones at over 100 merchant ships since the resurgence of conflict in the region, including engagements that resulted in casualties among sailors.

A temporary cessation of these attacks was noted following the declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza in January 2025, but heightened tensions resumed recently.

The current airstrikes mark a significant military response from the United States under the Trump administration, following a period of relative quiet in the region.

These operations are conducted exclusively by U.S. forces.

The USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group is actively involved in the mission, alongside additional naval assets, including the USS Georgia, a cruise missile submarine, stationed in the Red Sea.

In a broader regional context, the Houthi threats have disrupted global trade routes, compelling some maritime traffic to reroute around Africa due to security concerns in the Red Sea.

Trump's previous administration had faced scrutiny for perceived inaction against Houthi aggressions, prompting this more forceful military posture.

Though specific targets of the airstrikes have not been disclosed, U.S. officials maintain that operations aimed at Houthi leadership and military capabilities were necessary for the protection of international shipping.

The Israeli military, meanwhile, has refrained from commenting on the U.S. actions or the Houthi's targeting of Israeli-linked vessels, which remain a contentious point in the ongoing regional conflict.

As tensions continue to mount, the situation in Yemen reflects broader geopolitical struggles involving the United States, Iran, and regional actors, highlighting the complexities of maritime security amid ongoing conflict.
