Florida Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Roblox Over Alleged Child Safety Failures
State legal action claims the gaming platform failed to adequately protect children from sexual predators and misleading safety assurances
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a lawsuit against the online gaming platform Roblox, accusing the company of serious failures to protect children from sexual predators and deceptive practices that misrepresented the safety of its platform.
The complaint alleges that Roblox promoted itself to parents as a secure and child-friendly environment while allegedly allowing predators to exploit in-game chat, messaging and social features to target minors.
According to the lawsuit, the state contends that Roblox’s safeguards were insufficient and inconsistently enforced, exposing young users to inappropriate content and contact despite the company’s public assurances of robust moderation and parental controls.
The filing asserts that predators were able to groom children through private messaging and interactive features, and that existing protections did not adequately prevent or detect such activity.
Florida officials argue that these shortcomings amount to violations of state consumer protection laws, particularly where marketing claims suggested a higher level of safety than was delivered.
Attorney General Uthmeier stated that protecting children online is a core responsibility of technology companies that profit from youth engagement.
The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to compel Roblox to strengthen safety measures, increase transparency around moderation practices, and prevent what the state describes as deceptive representations to families.
It also requests civil penalties and other remedies permitted under Florida law.
Roblox, which has tens of millions of daily active users worldwide and a large child user base, has previously said it invests heavily in safety tools, content moderation and reporting systems, and that it works with law enforcement when criminal activity is identified.
The case places renewed scrutiny on how online platforms balance rapid growth with child protection obligations and reflects a broader push by states to hold technology companies accountable for online safety.
