Swedish Police Investigate Motives Behind Örebro School Shooting

A deadly attack at an adult education center leaves 11 dead, prompting inquiries into the shooter's background.
Swedish authorities are conducting an investigation into the motives of a gunman who killed 11 people, including himself, during an attack at an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden.

This incident is now being classified as the country's deadliest mass shooting to date.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday at the Risbergska adult education center, located approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm.

Preliminary reports suggest that the shooter may have been a former student of the institution.

Police found three rifles near his body and discovered 10 empty bullet magazines along with a large quantity of unused ammunition.

Police Chief Lars Wiren described the scene of the attack as chaotic, likening it to an 'inferno' with numerous casualties and distressing conditions upon their arrival.

Police reportedly reached the site five minutes after receiving the alarm, at which point the shooter began to direct his fire towards them.

The acute operational response lasted about one hour, concluding with the discovery of the assailant deceased and armed.

In the aftermath of the shooting, six individuals were hospitalized, five of whom required surgical intervention for gunshot wounds.

Regional health authorities later confirmed that all six are currently in stable condition, although two remain in intensive care.

Details regarding the victims’ identities have not yet been disclosed by police.

Authorities have indicated that there is currently no evidence pointing to ideological motives behind the shooter’s actions.

Investigations leader Anna Bergqvist stated, 'We don't see a clear motive, but we're looking for it.' As part of the ongoing investigation, police have yet to confirm the identity of the shooter and are awaiting forensic analysis, including genetic and fingerprint data.

The Risbergska adult education center is known for offering various adult courses and Swedish language classes, particularly for immigrants.

In a statement, the Syrian embassy in Stockholm has confirmed that Syrian nationals are among the deceased, though specifics have not been provided.

Additionally, Bosnia's foreign ministry reported that they were informed of one Bosnian citizen killed and another wounded in the incident.

As investigations continue, police are focusing on the shooter's potential connection to the school and seeking answers to better understand the events leading to this tragic incident.
